In 1911, Grafton Acklin founded the Acklin Stamping Company in Toledo to produce automotive stampings for Willys-Overland and other automotive companies. In the spring of 1917, Acklin shifted to the production of ammunition to support the war effort. As the war ended, the plant added new press lines and quickly shifted its production back to civilian goods.

By 1925, the company had outgrown its 40,000-square-foot facility on Dorr Street. Plans were soon made for a new 90,000-square-foot facility to be built on Nebraska Avenue.

The company continued to be privately owned until its purchase in 1952 by its principle and largest customer, Tecumseh Products (a major supplier of compressor housings and small engines to the automotive and home appliance market). Tecumseh continued to operate the plant until 1999, when the Acklin facility was scheduled to be shuttered.

Less than two months before this slated closing, ICE Industries, purchased Acklin Stamping from Tecumseh Products. With the implementation of work-rule changes and a team-oriented environment, the ICE team quickly acquired new business and won back many previously outsourced product lines. Under Howard’s leadership, ICE has seen a continued increase in sales and employment at the Acklin facility.
